The film is known for its simple storyline and yet a powerful take on the vulnerability of the legal system as well as the emotional quotient that one share with their family along with the role of media and society’s pre notions of false judgment that might make or break lives. The film revolves around the life of a young woman Gargi and her battle with the system and society when her father is arrested for molesting a child. With no moral and financial support, will Gargi be able to unveil the truth or is there something beyond what is seen?
WHAT IS THE FILM ABOUT?
The film revolves around a young woman Gargi who lives with her family in a Tamil Nadu Town. Gargi herself works as a teacher to make ends meet for her family to support her parents and younger sister. Her world turns upside down when her father Brahmanandam is arrested in relation to the gang rape of a 9-year-old girl who stayed in the society where he worked as a security guard. Gargi, herself a victim of molestation when young feels that her father can never do such a thing as he himself is a father of two daughters.
When even her closes ones refuse to help her, a lawyer named Indrans agrees to her help her as he feels he has nothing to lose. Indrans and Gargi work tirelessly to find evidence that shows her father is not guilty. However, in the end, when against all odds, Brahmanandan is released on bail due to a faulty investigation, Gargi finds out that her father was also one of the culprits. While she is dejected about it and feels her world falling apart after everything she went through, she does not hesitate to render her father to prison again.
WHY GARGI BECOMES A FILM THAT CREATED AN IMPACT?
The name Gargi means ‘someone who inspires you to think’. Like her name, Gargi makes us question the complex nature of human emotions, the perspective along with trial and tribulations by the media and society, and the impact it has on an individual. Even before it was proven that Brahmanandam was guilty, the media and society passed judgment on him. Even before a daughter was given a fair chance to defend her father, every right was taken away from them. Gargi was herself a victim of molestation and was saved by her father. To think of the emotional turmoil that Gargi undergoes, where her emotions towards her father are constantly in conflict with what she underwent and is undergoing, brings out the complexity of the human psyche through a simple storyline.
The legal loopholes in the investigation bring out the fragility of the justice system. The way media tweaks news and the way people react without considering the impact it has on people is something that forces one to think and reflect. When Gargi does a rigorous investigation to prove her father innocent, one small piece of information makes her realize her father is guilty. While she went through worse to get her father out of prison, it took her only a split second to send her father to prison again. Her interaction with the victim brings out her past memories and by providing the young girl with justice, she found justice for her younger self too.
