Gulmohar is a 2023 family drama film that was released on 3rd March 2023. Directed by Rahul V. Chittella, Gulmohar revolves around the residents of the ‘Gulmohar Villa’, The Batra family who have stayed in the villa for decades. Now that the villa is being sold, the family comes together for one last celebration. Whether it is a celebration or a revelation that only time will tell. WHAT IS THE FILM ABOUT?

Gulmohar Villa is being sold by the matriarch of the family, Sharmila Tagore as she plans to move to Pondicherry. Her elder son Arun and his family stayed in Gulmohar. However, they are breaking up as a family when Arun’s son Adi decides to separate from the family and try to make his own name. Arun’s uncle Diwakar is bitter about the fact that Arun is adopted and for Arun, it is a journey of accepting a hard truth. While other members of the family have their own battles to fight and identities to reclaim, Gulmohar still binds them somehow. As the family comes together for one last time to celebrate, some truths are revealed, some relations are mended and some self-acceptance is there.

Gulmohar is a work of the brilliant art of what one knows as filmmaking. The film is shot with sheer brilliance and the cinematography brings out nostalgia as well as the love that binds a family together despite the complexities of relations. The characterization is done in a way that supports the plot in every small narration. Be it the character development of Arun from a stable high-profile businessman to the revealing of the various layers of him that bring out a small child who is in search of love and acceptance, or Sharmila Tagore’s character slowly accepting her own desires after years of being the matriarch of the Batra family. The film beautifully depicts how every individual is stuck in a loop of complexities and yet they are united as one under one roof, under the scattered branches of Gulmohar. From the servants to the family members, everyone has their own story to tell.
